"The Harder they Fall" subverts norms — because the “villain” isn’t merely a predator, he’s also a visionary who inspires fierce loyalty

The CODE-X series catalogs a vast codex of source codes (aka “signs”) extracted from past audits.

The object of study in semiotics is not the signs but rather a general theory of signification; the goal of each “audit” is to build a model demonstrating how meaning is produced and received within a category or cultural territory. Signs on their own, therefore, only become truly revelatory and useful once we’ve sorted them into thematic complexes, and the complexes into codes, and the codes into a meaning map. We call this process “thick description”; the Code-X series is thin description.

“Harriet”: Janelle Monae as Marie Buchanon arms and trains Harriet for her mission

LOYAL ALLY” NORM: Someone who believes in you, and your cause — and offers unswerving support.

“Glory”: Shaw’s friend Cabot

LOYAL ALLY” FORMS: Another type of character who may help a Predator begin their journey to Protector is the loyal ally — often a social “insider”(comparatively) who offers support to the social outcast. Janelle Monae’s character in “Harriet”; Christoph Waltz’s character in “Django Unchained.” They may teach the character how to dress for a particular social role, how to walk and talk — in some ways they are an acting coach. “Of course I’ll help. I promise you.” (Nathaniel the bartender to Django in “Django 1966”)
