I’m coordinator of Semiofest’s series of informal online “sessions.” These events are intended not only to share best practices among, but to nurture collegiality and friendship within the global semio community.
Coming up on October 15th (at 2 pm UK time)…
HIGHS & LOWS OF SEMIOTIC PRACTICE
Many of us semioticians work independently — juggling everything from business development to doing the work to billing. And those of us who work for agencies often tend to be one-person departments. All of which can be isolating, which is why we want to devote a Semiofest Session to swapping stories about the highs and lows of this line of work — and everything in-between, too.
We’ll break into smaller groups to discuss the following questions, all of which were also posed in our recent survey. How did you find your way to doing semiotics? What major challenge(s) do you struggle with as a semiotician? What advice would you give to young person about the highs and lows of an applied semiotics practice?
We’ll follow with an open forum in which we’ll report out on the breakout discussions. The point is not to provide definitive answers to any of the issues that arise. Sharing is caring — that’s the goal.
