I’m coordinator of Semiofest’s series of informal online “sessions.” These events are intended not only to share best practices among, but to nurture collegiality and friendship within the global semio community.

Coming up on December 10th (at 2 pm UK time)…

CHARLES SANDERS PEIRCE

Mariane Cara, Chris Barnham, and Hamsini Shivakumar will share examples of how they’ve applied the pioneering US semiotician C.S. Peirce’s frameworks in their own practices.

Our sessionists:

  • CHRIS BARNHAM has run his own qualitative research consultancy, Chris Barnham Research and Strategy — running projects in the UK, Eire, Europe and North America — for the past 27 years. From 2014 to 2018, he researched a PhD on Peircean semiotics at University College London. His book on Peirce, The Natural History of the Sign, was published by De Gruyter in 2022. Chris’s application of Peircean semiotics to the problems of brand structure led to him being shortlisted in 2022 for the AURA Breakthrough Agency of the Year.
  • MARIANE CARA is a Brazilian semiotician and cultural strategist with degrees in Communication and Semiotics. Passionate for the meaningful signs of the absolutely ordinary, she divides her time between cultural reports on a vast range of categories and market niches and the adventure of being a mother to daughters Sofia and Elisa.

Session host: HAMSINI SHIVAKUMAR
