Netflix’s show The Queen’s Gambit has reignited interest in the game and fueled demand for chess sets. Just for fun, this 10-part series exhumes chess-themed advertising from the same era (mid-1950s through 1960s).


A beautiful image, from 1958, in which only the beer is in color. Miller High Life — positioned as the beer for the champagne-drinking upper-class set — suggests that their product is the perfect refreshment to accompany a game of chess. At what appears to be a tony, elite gentleman’s club. “Accepted and appreciated by those who demand and expect the very best.”
