Session: Semiotic Square

Image for Session: Semiotic Square

I’m coordinator of Semiofest’s series of informal online “sessions.” These events are intended not only to share best practices among, but to nurture collegiality and friendship within the global semio community.

Coming up on April 9th (at 2 pm UK time)…

THE SEMIOTIC SQUARE — DEAD OR ALIVE?

We kick off the series-led event with a thought-provoking discussion on the foundational and evergreen tool of semiotic analysis, the Semiotic Square. The question up for debate: The Semiotic Square – Dead or Alive / Where should it feature in our practice? Josh Glenn and Maria Papanthymou will discuss the uses of the so-called “semiotic square” in their practices — before inviting attendees to share their own ideas.

Get tickets (suggested donations only) at the link above.

Our sessionists:

  • JOSH GLENN is a Boston-based consulting semiotician. He is cofounder of the agency Semiovox, editor of the website HiLoBrow, founding editor of MIT Press’s Radium Age Science Fiction series, and author or editor of several books, including most recently Lost Objects and The Adventurer’s Glossary.
  • MARIA PAPANTHYMOU spent most of her life in Russia before relocating to Greece, where she now organizes professional courses for semioticians.
