Session: Sustainability Semiotics

I’m coordinator of Semiofest’s series of informal online “sessions.” These events are intended not only to share best practices among, but to nurture collegiality and friendship within the global semio community.

Coming up on March 17th (at 2 pm UK time)…

THE SEMIOTICS OF SUSTAINABILITY

The year’s first session will focus on a subject that is highly relevant not only to clients but to all of us who are worried about the environment and who wonder what we can do to help motivate people, companies, and governments to engage in sustainable practices. This is not only an urgent topic but a sensitive one — complicated by questions of culture, economics, and politics — so a one-size-fits-all model won’t cut it. We’ve invited applied semioticians from Argentina, China, and France to help us perceive “sustainability” through various different lenses… and also to discuss context-appropriate future strategies.

Our sessionists:

  • XIMENA TOBI co-founded Semiotica Studio in 2010 with Gabriela Pedranti. She lectures Semiotics of Mediatization at the University of Buenos Aires — Argentina, studying the connection between digital media and social change. She also works as a sustainability consultant, focusing on the cultural dimension of environmental practices.
  • SAMUEL GRANGE is based in Paris. He works as a semiotician on innovation and positioning subjects for many fields. He says: “I decided to become a semiotician at 17 years old because I love everything emotional, sensorial, that creates strong feelings… and yet, I can’t stop my rational mind from analyzing and explaining what I like or hate.
  • WILLIAM LIU is research director and semiotician of Labbrand Consulting Shanghai. He is also a stage performer as a tenor singer of the Shanghai Rainbow Chamber Choir. These roles make him passionate about revealing subtle human subconsciousness shifts and transforming opportunities into brand innovation ideas.

Session host: LUCIA LAURENT-NEVA
