Joël is a Belgian-Malaysian semiotician living in Penang, Malaysia. Previously based in London and São Paulo, he works across Southeast Asia and globally. He has degrees in European language, literature and culture from Oxford and Cambridge, and speaks French, German and Portuguese. Among his side projects is @sehsehpenang, an initiative to document the disappearing design heritage and handmade shop signs of Penang. He also sings with the Penang Philharmonic Chamber Choir and organises cultural events with the Alliance Française de Penang.
